In
support of our expanded meals programs, I want to remind everyone
of the new Restaurant Partnerships that we have recently formed.
As a Partner, a restaurant guarantees us 80-100 meals will be prepared
and delivered to the Sedona Community Center once monthly throughout
the year.
These
relationships provide the community of Sedona with an invaluable
service in their support of Meals on Wheels and our community lunch
program. Each day that is covered by a Restaurant Partner represents
a savings to SCC of $400-$500 in food cost.
Our
restaurant partners have now grown from four to eleven. The month
of March is proudly sporting the support of the following partners:
The Bistro at Bella Terra, Coffee
Pot Restaurant, The
Gallery on Oak Creek Restaurant at Amara Resort, Heartline
Café, Hideaway
Restaurant, Joey
Bistro, Oak
Creek Brewery & Grill, Oaxaca
Restaurant, Pizza
Picazzo, Reds
Restaurant at Sedona Rouge
and Shugrue’s Restaurant.

In
gratitude for the generosity and civic responsibility demonstrated
by these fine restaurants, we are hosting a Restaurant Partner Appreciation
Dinner next Monday evening.
We
are calling it our “Stepping Up to the Plate” awards
dinner. This reflects the fact that our partners have both literally
and figuratively stepped forward offering full plates of delectable,
nutritious meals addressing the community issue of senior hunger.
Artist
Dennis Ott, infamous department chair and board president of the
Sedona Arts Center, has graciously donated fine art “plates”
which will serve as the awards which will be presented to our partners.
This is merely a token of acknowledgment for the quiet step taken
by these restaurants to do very important work accompanied by virtually
no public recognition.
I
urge everyone in the Sedona community to frequent these fine eateries,
and take a moment to speak with the management and express your
appreciation for the outreach these restaurants are providing.
Cynthia
Strom is returning next weekend with her marvelous, one-woman musical
play entitled “Sing Me a Morning Song, Sedona”. This
play celebrates the life and times of Sedona Schnebly after whom
our town was named.
The
play will be presented Friday evening, March 31st at 7:30, and then
again on Saturday, April Fool’s Day at 2 pm. The play is lively
and spirited, in addition to being informative. The audience will
be involved in some of the storytelling as well as the sing-a-longs,
so this is an interactive event.
At
the end of the play the audience will enjoy apple dumpling ala mode
served warm during a running slide show of the actual Schnebly family.
Apple dumplings were Sedona’s favorite dessert to serve the
guests that would frequent the Schnebly homestead.
Tickets
are $8 for SCC members, $10 for guests when purchased in advance.
Tickets can be purchased at the door for $15.
Also
next Friday we begin a new round of computer classes. David
Green will lend his considerable skills to instruct a class
in the basics of word-processing. The class is taught at the Sedona
campus of Yavapai College
at a cost of $22.
Enrollment
can be done at the college or here at SCC if that is more convenient.
The class will run for two Fridays, each from 1-4 pm. Call us if
you would like more information on this or our upcoming classes
in Microsoft Word Graphics and Internet Basics and email.
Next
week we are also pleased to be presenting the third edition of Sample
Sedona, our evening cooking class. This month we are featuring the
culinary skills of Ray Leza, executive chef at Dahl & Diluca
Restaurante.
An
elegant three course Italian meal will be demonstrated, with the
audience partaking of the courses at their completion. The evening
will end with individual servings of crème brulee which attendees
will caramelize themselves.
Due
no doubt to the tremendous job of last month’s guest chefs,
Ron Warriner and Manuel Munguia from Pizza
Picazzo’s, this month’s class is almost already
sold out, so call for reservations quickly.
Our social services include
home-delivered Meals on Wheels delivered by a devoted fleet of volunteer
drivers. These folks donate not only their time and gasoline, but
their compassion.
Our
Community Lunch is served at the center Monday through Friday at
noon. This program is made possible by our able and generous kitchen
staff, our civic-minded Restaurant Partners and is served by our
gracious volunteer hosts and hostesses.
Our
Transportation program gives
senior adults “door-to-door” service to the store, bank
and doctor Monday through Friday between 9 and 2. Our professional
drivers are the most kind, caring and patient men in the business.
Our
Telecare program provides
daily telephone calls to individuals in need of a welfare check
seven days a week. This vital service is provided by a cadre of
caring and concerned volunteers.
For
more information, to volunteer or to make reservations for our classes,
events or social services, call 282-2834. We are located at the
corner of Harmony Drive and Melody Lane in West Sedona.
