With the month of May upon us, it is unbelievably once again time to turn our thoughts to POOL SEASON here at the Sedona Community Center.

The SCC Pool Committee, headed up by Maryann Thomas (member of the Board of Directors as well as an avid SCC pool user), has been in session for months and lots of exciting ideas are being implemented.

This Sunday, the Sedona Community Center will celebrate with a Pool Opening Party. From noon until two, we invite our membership to join us with a potluck plate. Sparkling pool, readied-for-the-season ramada and beautiful new landscaping graces our backyard.

SCC Pool

We are proud of our ever-improving physical facility. New paint, floor and window treatments, enhanced temperature control, state-of-the-art theatre capacity, and newly paved, level parking areas with enhanced exterior lighting are but a few of the improvements witnessed in the past twelve months.

Even as we enjoy and celebrate our place as a community center with activities, events and classes, we must remember that SCC exists primarily as the provider of social service programs which support and protect the seniors in our community.

And so, as I constantly remind myself as we make important decisions regarding governance, fundraising, marketing, operations, programming and strategic planning, the reason for all of our work is the provision of service.

Therefore, everything we do must be in support, philosophically and financially, of Meals on Wheels, Community Lunch, Breakfast Club, Telecare and Transportation.

The cost of our social service programs will exceed a quarter of a million dollars this year. We receive $115,000 from the City of Sedona, and another $30-40,000 annually from other granting sources. The rest we must make up through donations, memberships, class and rental fees, and of course, fundraising.

In order to attract even more membership to SCC this summer, and to maximize the benefits every member enjoys, we have invested in serious backyard maintenance in the past month.

Our pool shell was completely stripped to the bone, rebar replacement and leak-patching was accomplished. We now sport a beautiful new pool surface, sparkling clean and smooth as the proverbial baby’s bottom. The pool deck has also been patched and painted. Everything looks brand new.

Pool hours will be Monday through Saturday, 10 am until 7 pm. This allows for almost 55 hours of available pool use each week.

Additionally, membership at the SCC pool includes free water-exercise classes. Classes are offered between 8-10, Monday through Friday on a donation-only basis. Come check out the variety of aquacise and noodle-workout classes our instructors have developed.

Occasionally we suffer pool closures brought about by the monsoons. We now have a cell phone devoted to the SCC swimming pool.

Any change to the posted pool hours will be met with a recorded message informing the caller of the date and time of closure. When conditions allow, the reopening of the pool will be announced via another recording. The status of our pool will be immediately available to our membership at all times.

We understand that our lovely, heated, saltwater swimming pool is the reason many of our members have chosen to join the Sedona Community Center. This summer, the pool will be more inviting and enjoyable than ever.

If you aren’t yet a member, now’s the time.

SCC’s social services include home-delivered Meals on Wheels delivered by a devoted fleet of volunteer drivers. These folks donate not only their time and gasoline, but their compassion.

Our Community Lunch is served at the center Monday through Friday at noon. This program is made possible by our able and generous kitchen staff, our civic-minded Restaurant Partners and is served by our gracious volunteer hosts and hostesses.

Our Transportation program gives senior adults “door-to-door” service to the store, bank and doctor Monday through Friday between 9 and 2. Our professional drivers are the most kind, caring and patient men in the business.

Our Telecare program provides daily telephone calls to individuals in need of a wellness check seven days a week. This vital service is available to all interested Sedona-area residents and is provided by a cadre of caring and concerned volunteers.

For more information, to volunteer or to make reservations for our classes, events or social services, call 282-2834. We are located at the corner of Harmony Drive and Melody Lane in West Sedona.
